Challenge:
This homeowner in St. Paul suspected hail damage from storms that hit the eastern metro area. The roof was over 15 years old, so he reached out to his insurance agent for a recommendation for a reputable contractor. Because the home was built in 1902, and many of the windows and other things were originals, he wanted to make sure he had a contractor he could trust.
Solution:
After our initial free inspection, we determined that the roof had endured hail damage, and it was in need of a full replacement. Before we even began the project, the homeowner was very concerned about the landscaping as well as the glass atrium on top of the home. To quell his concern, we thoroughly protected his yard using tarps and a drop net. We also built a cage of plywood around the atrium to make sure there would be no damage. After we had prepped for construction, we began by removing the old, damaged shingles. We always make sure to inspect the roof decking underneath to ensure that everything was up to code.
Our installation began with laying down a synthetic underlayment. We then added an Ice & Water shield, which helps protect against strong winds and driving rain. The installation of the shingles themselves was a complicated process, as there were many steep parts of the roof, including a very large, steep turret. We made sure to use harnesses on the particularly steep parts, and because of the steep pitch of the turret, we hand sealed them to ensure they would be protected against future storms. We completed the installation of Premium Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Shingles in the color “Peppercorn”. After all was completed, we did a thorough cleanup of the yard with a powerful magnet to pick up any flyaway nails, and the homeowners are loving their new roof!
